Rory McIlroy Had One Main Reason For Calling Off His Divorce.

The Real Reason Rory McIlroy Called Off His Divorce

Rory McIlroy has been chasing history at Augusta National this week, but just months ago, the biggest question in his life wasn’t about a green jacket.

It was about whether his marriage would survive. The four-time major champion and his wife, Erica Stoll, nearly ended their eight-year marriage in 2024, sparking a wave of speculation and tabloid buzz. But in a twist just as dramatic as any back-nine charge, McIlroy called off the divorce and chose to fight for his family instead.

Now, as he leads the Masters field at 12-under heading into Sunday’s final round, McIlroy finds himself not only battling for a career grand slam but doing so with the support of the woman he nearly walked away from. It’s a comeback that’s played out both on and off the course.

Back in the summer of 2024, McIlroy filed for divorce in Florida, marking what seemed to be the end of a marriage that began in 2017. The news caught many off guard. McIlroy and Stoll, who met through the golf world and share a daughter, Poppy, had long kept their personal life private. But as rumors swirled, McIlroy stayed silent- until he wasn’t.

In a rare and candid moment, McIlroy addressed the speculation head-on. “There have been rumors about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate,” he said in a statement. “Responding to each rumor is a fool’s game. Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together.”

Previewing Celtics-Dubs and the evolution of space in the NBA with Mike Prada
In many ways, the 2022 NBA Finals series between the Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors has been a series a long time in coming. From the golden age of the 1960s pitting Bill Russell against Wilt Chamberlain up to the present 3-point revolution sparked in large part because of the Dubs and the defense the Celtics have built to slow, the way these two teams have played one another serves as a tangible history of the league’s evolution. It just so happens that The Athletic’s Mike Prada recently finished a book that traces the path of that evolution. In “Spaced Out: How the NBA’s Three-Point Revolution Changed Everything You Thought You Knew About Basketball,” the two teams currently facing off in the finals play a key role, making Prada an ideal interlocutor to break down how this series might play out.  On this episode of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast, Prada joins your usual hosts Alex Goldberg and Justin Quinn to talk about his new book, how it is entangled with the basketball we are about to see unfold, and what we ought to expect from this Celtics-Dubs battle. If you want a deeper understanding of how the game has changed over time without having to take intensive courses on NBA tactics, or just want to know who we all think will win the 2022 title, this is the pod for you. Can Boston find the right combination of effort, scheme, and coaching to save their season from the brink of disaster? The hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast jumped into the fray to try and make sense of what went wrong from curious coverage and rotation decisions, coaching mistakes, and poor late-game execution.  They also get into what they want to see in Game 3, as well as the other team currently in a 0-2 hole in the conference finals. Code Reds – Breaking Down All Things Cincinnati Baseball with Mike Petraglia
Code Reds: Trags Rob Dibble Reason For Optimism for 2024 Reds
In the inaugural episode of “Code Reds”, Trags talks with Reds 1990 World Series champion and NLCS MVP Rob Dibble about the prospects for the 2024 Cincinnati Reds and what it will take for results to meet the high expectations for a team that improved 20 games from 2022 to 2023. Can they make another huge jump to World Series contenders?

The timing couldn’t be more symbolic. As he prepares for the most important career round, Rory McIlroy does so grounded in something far more meaningful than a trophy. Winning a Masters would be historic. But keeping his family together may have already been the biggest win of all.

And if Sunday ends with a green jacket and a walk off the 18th green into Erica’s arms, it won’t just be another golf story. It’ll be a full-circle moment- personal, professional, and powerful.
