Exploring Morgan Freeman’s Comforting Farm In Mississippi

Morgan Freeman’s career has taken him all over the world, though he’s chosen his farm house in Charleston, Mississippi as his comfort zone.

With a career that spans over six decades, Morgan Freeman is something of an anomaly to the standard Hollywood machine. He’s known to be a humble individual who avoids the spotlight when he’s not performing, and has even kept out of the public eye during most industry events, such as the Academy Awards. While it’s not unusual for a man of Freeman’s age to be off social media, the silk-voiced thespian seems to enjoy his privacy on and off the net, and has even lived outside of Los Angeles for over 30 years.

Given that Morgan Freeman is such a beloved performer, many fans have begun to wonder exactly where he lives, and what he’s doing when he’s not taking on blockbuster roles as the president of the United States, or God himself. If you’re a long-time fan of Morgan Freeman, it may interest you to know that he’s currently living in a luxurious farmhouse in Charleston, Mississippi, in the very same neighborhood where he was raised.

Inside Freeman’s Charleston Home

Morgan Freeman’s farmhouse is far from your typical country dwelling. Though the foundation of the home has been in his family for generations, the multi-talent has expanded the property into a sprawling estate, totaling 124 acres. Originally, it was a humble home owned by his grandparents, which allowed them to live off the land with some basic gardening space to raise a few animals. During the mid 20th century, Freeman’s mother took ownership of the ranch, and the acclaimed actor purchased the land from her after achieving fortune and fame in 1991. Today, the hacienda-style mansion measures two stories in height, and includes its own helicopter pad. It also comes with a backyard golf course, a large lake loaded with fish and a full tennis court. A gazebo with seating can be found right next to the pool, so friends and family can enjoy a shaded lunch while monitoring the children as they swim.

Inside the house, Freeman boasts a grand foyer with a massive staircase and gorgeous chandelier, directing the energy of the home into the kitchen and dining area. The 87-year-old is said to be very fond of hosting dinner parties, which makes sense when you take a look at his functional modern kitchen. The area includes tons of counter space and an array of sparkling appliances, with a full suite of cookware for his chef. Off to the side, Freeman’s dining area has access to a wine rack containing a few of his seasonal favorites, and a quiet study lined with books, where he can enjoy the sunlit solitude of his tucked-away estate. Freeman lives all by himself in the massive ranch, though the quiet doesn’t seem to bother him, especially when he has so many animals to keep him company.

The Functional Farm and Garden

In case you thought Morgan Freeman was living the Hollywood lifestyle, and using the aesthetic of a farm as a rustic veneer, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that the Academy Award winner actually raises horses and other livestock. He’s very passionate about his horses, and maintains several mounts on the property year-round. When he’s not rearing them for a ride through the shaded trails of Mississippi, he also offers services to other nearby equestrians. A full vegetable garden and orchard can also be found on the estate, where Freeman grows stunning magnolia trees, lavender and clover plants.

In 2014, Freeman learned about the plight of local bee populations, which were in steep decline at the time. To curb this issue, the Driving Miss Daisy actor outfitted a large portion of his farm into a bee sanctuary, importing dozens of hives from an Arkansas conservatory. In the years since, Freeman has continued updating his property with floral arrangements and bee-friendly plants with the intention of bolstering populations across the South.

Morgan Freeman’s Neighborhood

Outside of Morgan Freeman’s property line, you won’t find many neighbors. The secluded area allows the Hollywood icon to live in peace, while retaining his attachment to the thriving Charleston neighborhood. Just a short drive away, Freeman can visit with his friend and business partner Bill Luckett. Together, the pair own the Ground Zero Blues Club, as well as the upscale Madidi restaurant. Unfortunately, Madidi was closed down in 2022 after over a decade of service, though those who had the privilege of attending the eatery know that it was well worth the buzz.

No matter what opportunities Freeman chooses to pursue next, you can rest assured they’ll be centered around his lavish Mississippi home. The Shawshank Redemption star has lived all over the United States in his 87 years, and has maintained that Mississippi has a special place in his heart. Beyond that, Freeman plans to continue working, and even has three films in active production slated for upcoming release.
